Snails

Snails are fascinating creatures with a variety of habits that allow them to thrive in different environments. Most snails are nocturnal. They prefer to come out during the night or in damp, overcast conditions. These conditions help them avoid dehydration. Their moist bodies are sensitive to sunlight and dry conditions. During the day, they often retreat into their shells. They secrete a layer of mucus called an epiphragm to seal themselves inside and conserve moisture.

Movement

Snails move using a muscular structure called a "foot." This structure contracts in a wave-like motion. This motion allows them to glide over surfaces. They secrete mucus, which acts as a lubricant and protective layer, helping them traverse rough surfaces without injury.

DIET

Their diet varies depending on species but primarily consists of plant material like leaves, stems, and algae. Some snails, like carnivorous varieties, feed on other small invertebrates.

Metabolic Rate

In cooler climates or during droughts, many snails enter a state of hibernation or estivation. They curl up inside their shells and significantly reduce their metabolic rate. Snails are hermaphroditic, possessing both male and female reproductive organs, which enhances their chances of reproduction in solitary environments.
