Having a Post Office in your farmhouse is certainly an asset in terms of meeting the members of the community. As a child and as a young teenager I had the opportunity and the good fortune of living this experience. This was at the Griffin house on Gosford Road in Shannon, QC.

Jack Griffin would pick up the mail at Valcartier Station in the late afternoon, bring it back to the Post Office, where it would be sorted and given to Elmer Thompson to be delivered, to people on the 6 th, 7 th and 8 th Ranges.

Of course, many of the neighbours living close by would congregate at the P.O. to pick up their mail and usually yesterday's Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph.On certain days Jack would ask me to read the news to the neighbours who were present. Loved this task, it made me feel useful and important.

Occasionally I would invent a few lines or change the content of the news, eg. Changing, the number of German planes shot down the previous day. For some reason, I thought that I was pretty smart doing this. During those years, 1943-44, we were in the middle of World War 2. I guess I was trying to impress some of the neighbours, namely Pete Powell, Martin Conway Senior, Frank King and a few others.

8 Best German Fighter Planes of WW2

  • Messerschmitt Bf 109.

  • Focke-Wulf Fw 190.

  • Dornier Do 17.

  • Messerschmitt Me 410.

  • Messerschmitt Bf 110.

  • Heinkel He 162.

  • Messerschmitt Me 262.

  • Messerschmitt Me 163.

This experience was very positive for me. I certainly enjoyed my summers living with Jackie, Margaret and of course Rose Mary who saved my skin a few times when I would get caught with my hand in the cookie jar.

All this happened 70 years ago, wonderful memories.
