Working on the Griffin farm was quite an experience for a 10-year-old city slicker like me. In the mid 40's we were in the midst of World War 2. Farms in Shannon, QC was in most instances the only source of revenue, I or 2 horses, 3 or 4 cows and a bull of course, maybe a few pigs.

There were hens in the yard, being in bare feet as I liked to be meant dodging hen excrements all over the place.
I tried to help out as much as I could. Tramping the hay was my main summer work. I remember when I would pray for rain the next day which would give me the freedom to visit my friends on the sixth range.

Jackie, my cousin had 2 horses. One day I heard him calling one of the horses by the name of Dan. I was really upset. How could anyone use my name for a horse? I decided that I would approach Jacke with the intention of changing the horse's name. I said to Jackie, "I'm not very happy that the horse's name is Dan, please, could you change his name" I did receive a swift reply from Jackie,
"You know Dan, we could always call you Prince".
